This WSQ Diploma aims to equip the participants with the fundamental skills of writing different types of stories and scripts for film and television production.

 

Introduction

Aligned to the Creative Industries Workforce Skills Qualification (CI WSQ) framework, Singapore Media Academy is proud to offer the WSQ Diploma in Film & Television (Script).

Developed and delivered by industry practitioners, this WSQ Diploma aims to equip the participants with the fundamental skills of writing different types of stories and scripts for film and television production.

Outline

The WSQ Diploma in Film & Television (Script) consists of 7 units of study.

  1. Write a Narrative Script
  2. Administer and Manage the Use of Licensed Copyright Materials Created

  5. Write a Sitcom Script
  6. Address Problems Which Impact on Work

Mode of Training

Theory

 

Assessment

  • All units will conclude with a compulsory assessment.
  • Assessments may include role plays, quizzes, assignments, projects, and written examinations.
  • Participants need to achieve at least 75% attendance for each unit before they are allowed to sit for the assessment.

 

Certificate

Participants will receive a WSQ Statement of Attainment (SOA) upon successful completion of each unit and its assessment.

Completion of all the required units will qualify candidates for the WSQ Diploma in Film & Television (Script) under the Creative Industries Workforce Skills Qualification (CI WSQ) framework.

Participants will also receive a Certificate of Attendance issued by Singapore Media Academy for each unit completed.

Tan Loon Boon (Alvin)

Alvin is the Director of QES Management Pte Ltd, which was incorporated in 9 December 2000.

Alvin’s main roles in the top management include being responsible for leadership and development of a team of 20 persons of WSH professional and administrative Environmental, Safety and Health programs, procedures, training, work practices and ensuring the effective implementation of risk controls by the staffs on client premises. Alvin has served 15 years (1981–1996) in the Housing Development Board Structural Engineering Department (Safety Unit) as a Safety Officer prior to his practices as a Workplace Safety and Health Officer in the industry.

Alvin has more than 28 years of experience in Occupational Safety and Health. He is a Ministry of Manpower Accredited Trainer since 1995 for Basic Industrial Safety and Health Course for Supervisor, Safety committee Member Course, Building Construction Safety Supervisor/Manager Course, Lifting Supervisor Safety Course, Formwork Safety Course for Supervisor, Safety Instruction Course (Manhole) for supervisors, Confined Space Safety Assessor, Rigger/Signalman Course and Metal scaffold/Suspended Scaffold (Gondola) Supervisor and worker practical lesson trainer. Beside of the above OSH experience, he was also certified by Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) as a trainer for Environmental Management courses.

Janet Liau Su Shyan @ Aishya Liau

Janet is the Executive Producer and Writer of DV Studio Pte Ltd.

Janet started life in broadcast as a researcher writer for variety and info-ed programmes. She then went to work in trade development, business consulting, advertising and media sales before returning to broadcast in 2009. Her varied work experience helped her to become a better storyteller.

With DV Studio, she has helped to conceptualize and produce more than 20 television projects for Mediacorp Suria channel. The last episode of Menantu International (a drama series about transnational marriage in 2016) was the highest rated episode on Suria in 12 years.

She was the concept creator and storyteller for a documentary, Terbit, which had won the Best Factual programme at the Pesta Perdana Awards.

She has conceptualized and written for corporations and government institutions’ videos ranging from sitcom-style for training videos; to anniversary videos and videos that tug the heartstrings. In March 2015, DV Studio was privileged to produce PA’s Tribute To LKY.

Janet is also an Adjunct Lecturer at NUS Business School.

Lim Say Teck (Richard)

Richard directs the team that oversees the task of training polytechnic students on relationship.

Richard is a Consultant Psychotherapist in private practice and a Training Consultant since 2001. Equipped with psychological insights and techniques. Richard provides leadership training and consultancy to groups within public and private sector organisations. Most of these trainings and consultancies focus on enhancing relationship management, psychological skills in communication, team facilitation and coaching, workplace counselling and conflict and crisis management.

Seah Chang Un

Chang Un is a freelance writer who writes regularly for television, feature films, documentaries, commercials and online webisodes.

Chang Un was employed as a Scriptwriter at Mediacorp Singapore for eleven years from 1989 to 2000. He was one of the chief creative forces behind the successful sitcom, Under One Roof.

Recently, Chang Un developed and wrote a regional webisode series for Yahoo! Singapore starring the popular comedian, Kumar.

On the teaching front, Chang Un conducts a screenwriting course at the Nanyang Technological University’s School of Communication and Information. It is a course he has been teaching since 2005. His previous teaching experience includes stints at Digipen Institute of Technology and Nanyang Polytechnic.

Foo Tiang Khuen, Juan (Fu Xiangjun, Juan)

Juan is a film producer, curator, film jury, and adjunct lecturer. His 20-year experience in this profession includes working as production crew, cameraman, script-reader, script-writer and producer.

His professional working scope in creative project development and talent management led him to be one of the few Singaporean producers to have optioned and sold a film script to a Hollywood studio.

He was involved in 7 films and produced Singapore’s first digital film ‘Return to Pontianak’. He also operated his own production company ‘Ground Glass Images’ which produced stage-to-screenplay ‘Dirty Laundry’,  co-production ‘Hainan Chicken Rice’ and award-winning cult film ‘Perth'.

He was an academic board member of the Singapore Media Academy and a panelist on the programme advisory panel for the Multimedia Technology & Design programme at UniSIM. He also trains student filmmakers from institutions such as the polytechnics, NUS and NTU.

Lee Chee Keng (Li Jiqing)

Chee Keng is a director, writer and producer whose works cross theatre, events, as well as TV and films.

He is fluent in both the Chinese and English language, and has worked in China, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore. His international experience has put him in a good position to produce transnational collaborations in China.

Chee Keng graduated from the National University of Singapore with a first class honours bachelor degree and subsequently, a Masters degree in Japanese Studies. He obtained his doctorate degree in Theatre Studies from the renowned Beijing Central Academy of Drama.

Chee Keng shares his experiences and observations through teaching. He has lectured at National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, Victoria College of the Arts (Melbourne) and Shanghai Theatre Academy among others.

Minimum Entry Requirements

  • Minimum Age: 18
  • Academic Requirement: Obtain Pass Grade in GCE O-Level subjects including at least B4 for English (or IELTS overall band score 6.5 and above or equivalent) and 2 other subjects or equivalent
  • Applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements may still apply and will be considered based on:
    • At least 1 year working experience in any industry; and/or
    • Oral interview or evaluation test by Singapore Media Academy to determine suitability for the course
  • Applicants may be called for interview at the discretion of Singapore Media Academy.
