MASTERCLASS: TV Writing 102 - Creating a Hit TV Show

This 5-day intensive Masterclass is designed to give writers, directors, and producers the creative and practical skills necessary to create Singapore’s (or the world’s) next hit TV series.

TV shows like The Handmaid’s Tale, Peaky Blinders, and even Survivor aren’t just hits in their countries of origin; they’re smash hits across the globe. Which means the idea in your head today… could be an international phenomenon tomorrow.

But coming up with a great TV idea takes more than just an idea. A hit TV show is designed in highly specific ways to churn out episode after episode for years to come. An improperly developed series will never have staying power — or worse, never get out of the gate.

Thus, A-list showrunners like Shonda Rhimes (Grey’s Anatomy), Bertram van Munster (The Amazing Race), and Aaron Korsh (Suits) use special techniques and processes to create, develop, and pitch their work.

In this Masterclass, students learn the essentials of developing hit TV shows. They will create their own concept and characters, craft a pilot, generate episode ideas, and put it all together in a presentable, sellable pitch.

Learning Outcomes

  • The essential ingredients of all hit TV shows
  • Crafting a sustainable premise
  • Developing characters that hook audiences (even on reality shows)
  • Testing a series for longevity: can your idea go the distance?
  • Putting together an irresistible pitch
  • Designing a successful pilot
  • How to take (or refute) network notes
  • Architecting your show’s entire season (and future seasons)

Who Should Attend

TV writers, producers, directors and accomplished professionals from other/related fields (playwrights, journalists, novelists, etc.) who wish to better understand the processes behind TV storytelling and eventually become the "showrunner" of their own programme.
