MASTERCLASS: Scripting the Unscripted - Writing for Game, Talk, Competition and Variety Shows

Overview

Singapore Idol. The Tonight Show. Jeopardy. Asia’s Got Talent.

From talk and variety shows to competition and game shows, unscripted or semi-scripted programmes dominate the small screen. These shows do not use traditional scripts but they have been meticulously crafted to tell rich, engaging human stories.

Whether they feature celebrity interviews, in-studio bits and games, or large-scale challenges, they are designed to do one thing: take viewers on a rich and engaging emotional journey.

In this 3-day masterclass, we explore different creative techniques and processes used to bring these stories to life and make game, talk, competition, or variety show as gripping and engrossing as possible. We will focus on four areas:

  • Creating relatable show concepts
  • Writing powerful host copy
  • Producing strong guests, contestants, and other “characters”
  • Developing engaging games, challenges, and bits

In each topic, participants learn creative writing or producing techniques and participate in exercises designed to hone their own skills.

At the end of this Masterclass, participants leave not just with a new understanding of how talk, game, variety, and competition shows work… but with skills necessary to produce them.

Learning Outcomes

  • Creating show concepts that stand apart from the crowd
  • Designing original games or challenges that amplify the themes of the show
