MASTERCLASS: Feature Documentary

 

Overview

During this 5-day masterclass, participants will be guided to develop their own idea for a feature documentary from concept to pitch, with lectures, peer reviews and practical exercises. They will learn about how documentary fits into the International filmmaking Industry.

 

Learning Outcomes

  • Developing your ideas into viable documentary
  • Refining your idea: one-line, one paragraph, one-page. What works? What doesn't?
  • Writing a treatment that the funding bodies want to read
  • Choosing the form to fit the story and the market
  • Breaking down your story and story arc
  • Interview techniques including camera placement, lighting & sound
  • Filming multiple subjects in chaotic spaces
  • Understand the current marketplace: broadcasters, distributors, sales agents, VOD, crowdfunding
  • ​Finance plans, budgeting and scheduling
  • Create pitch documents

Trainer Profile

Dylan Blowen is an award winning filmmaker that began his career in Los Angeles working at Paramount Pictures and Universal Studios. Later, he moved to New York to produce live television before moving to Sydney in 2002 where he formed Pony Films, with Rachel Landers, to produce successful, award-winning high impact films. His films have screened all over the world and won many prizes including the Foxtel Documentary Prize at the Sydney Film Festival and the NSW Premier’s History Prize as well as nominations for a Grierson Innovation Award and AFI for best feature documentary.
