MASTERCLASS: Understanding of Television Formats, Edits and Its Future

 

Overview

This is a 3-day Masterclass where participants will learn the idea and understanding of Television shows format, how to direct the television videos for the edit and also the future of Television.

 

Learning Outcomes

1.     Understanding of Television Formatting

  • The participants will learn how to think about TV formats. They will be able to analyse formatted shows and correct the failings. They will be capable of contributing creatively to production ‘brainstorming’ sessions and make structural contributions to ideas and proposals form a position of knowledge about format production.

2.     How to Build 'Cognitive Models' for Video Editing

  • The participants will learn how to build ‘cognitive models’ of sequences before shooting. This mental model making (imagining things in spatial 3-D) is the key to good directing, helping to avoid the common tendency to shoot everything. They will learn how to set up interviews; how to ask questions in the correct way; how to get eye-lines in the correct place and how to avoid failures in the language of film.

3.     Understanding of Television Future

  • The participants will be better equipped to think about the wider implications of their role as programme makers in a new media world. They will be able to argue for more interactivity and begin the process of adjusting their work to suit this world. It will encourage them to be bolder in their embrace of convergence and to start investigating how their directing and storytelling skills can be applied to it.

Trainer Profile

Patrick Uden is one of the most influential execs working in UK television. Having made his name as a director and documentary maker at the BBC, where his credits included Tomorrow's World, Horizon and QED, Patrick set up his own pioneering production company Uden Associates, before becoming the creative force behind Channel 4's Bafta-winning Four Docs. More recently, he has worked as a consultant executive producer on some of television's most successful series including The Apprentice, The Restaurant, and Junior Doctors: Your Life in their Hands.
