Understand the principles of screenwriting from a creative and industrial perspective.

 

Overview

Adapting a client's brief turning it into a script that is lucid, cogent and interesting is a useful skill for any screenwriter to have. This unit will cover the principles of screenwriting from a creative and industrial perspective, and help screenwriters interpret a client's brief and transform it into an impressive script.

 

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand what the scriptwriter does, the various documents they have to write, their working methods, and the basics of story, character, and genre
  • Create a story and put various genre spins through structured brainstorming
  • Deal with tricks of the trade: suspense, surprise, set ups and pay offs, props and symbols
  • Develop a brief that a writer can respond to creatively
  • Identify the seven common story problems and their solutions
  • Edit scripts to make dialogue work and filmable action descriptions
